How to deflect a third of your support tickets without hiring

3 Jun 2026 · 5 min read · Storeloop team

When support volume climbs, the instinct is to hire. But throwing people at a queue full of repetitive, self-fixable questions is expensive and never really ends. The better lever is deflection: removing the reason the ticket was raised at all.

Not all tickets are equal

A complex complaint deserves a human. “Can you change my address?” does not. The first is why you have a support team; the second is a task the customer would happily do themselves if you let them.

Target the repetitive middle

Order-status and order-change questions make up roughly 20–40% of ecommerce tickets. Give customers a way to self-serve those specific actions and a large, predictable chunk of your queue simply disappears.

Deflection is not about answering faster. It is about the ticket never being created.

What good deflection looks like

  • Self-service edits on the thank-you and order-status pages
  • A clear edit window so customers know what is possible and when
  • Changes that sync back to Shopify so agents are not cleaning up after
  • Reporting that shows exactly how many tickets you removed

Reinvest the time

Every deflected ticket is capacity handed back to your team for the conversations that build loyalty. You scale support quality without scaling headcount.
