Why “Where is my order?” emails are quietly draining your store

Every store has a silent tax on growth: the steady drip of “where is my order?” and “can I change my order?” messages that land in the inbox all day. Individually they feel small. Added up, they are one of the biggest costs in your support operation.

How big is the problem, really?

Order-status and order-change questions, often grouped as WISMO (“where is my order”), are consistently the single largest support category in ecommerce. Industry estimates put them at roughly 20–40% of all support tickets, climbing higher during peak season.

Each one is not free to answer. Handling a single WISMO contact costs somewhere in the region of $5–12 once you account for agent time, tooling and the context-switching that pulls your team away from higher-value work.

If a fifth to two-fifths of your tickets are the same handful of questions, that is not a staffing problem. It is a product problem.

Why these tickets are avoidable

The uncomfortable truth is that most order-change tickets exist because the customer has no way to fix the thing themselves. They typed the wrong flat number, they want a different size, they meant to add one more, so they email you and wait. Your agent then does by hand what the customer could have done in ten seconds.

Turn the ticket into a self-serve action

The fix is to give customers a safe, time-boxed way to edit their own order straight after checkout. Address, contact details, quantities, delivery method, cancellations and receipts can all be self-served from the thank-you and order-status pages, with every change written straight back to Shopify.

Do that and the most repetitive slice of your queue simply stops arriving. Your team gets to spend its time on the conversations that actually need a human.
