One-click vs thank-you page upsells: which should you use?
“Post-purchase upsell” is not one thing. There are distinct placements after checkout, and they behave differently. Knowing which to reach for is the difference between an offer that converts and one that annoys.
The one-click post-purchase page
This appears immediately after payment, between checkout and the confirmation. The customer can add a product with a single tap, charged instantly to the card they just used, with no re-checkout. It is the highest-converting placement because intent is at its peak.
The thank-you page offer
This sits on the order confirmation itself. It is a softer moment; the customer is reading their receipt. Offers here add items to the same order for you to collect, so they still ship together with no extra shipping.
The order-status page offer
This shows up when the customer returns to check on their order, often days later. It is a second bite, useful for reminders, replenishment and complementary products once the first item is on its way.
Run them together
These are not either-or. The three placements form a loop around the whole post-purchase moment. Layer them, keep each offer relevant, and measure take rate per placement so you can double down on what works for your catalogue.
